The Bookworm and the Billionaire: Lisa and Maxwell's Full Story, Characters & Ending

Lisa literally runs into Max in the publisher's lobby, and he is charmed. Her first coaching session at an industry party is a disaster. She trips, pulls off Max's jacket on her way to the floor, and her advice to "be mysterious" turns Giselle into a woman telling bad writer jokes. Max leaves, and a furious Giselle nearly sends Lisa home.

Then Lisa bumps into Max again at the public library, crying over a stack of dating books. He has already looked up Heidi Brushfire and wants to read her. He invites her to see his first edition of Wuthering Heights, and the visits keep coming: an afternoon reading by Giselle's pool, a water fight, dinner by the beach. Lisa tells herself she is only gathering notes for Giselle, but Max keeps flirting and she keeps melting.

Max opens up about the divorce that broke him and asks Lisa to read his unfinished manuscript, The Thorn Tree, and help him find an ending. That night they kiss among the bookshelves and spend the night together. Meanwhile, Max signs a very long contract with Emu Publishing without reading it. Giselle starts dressing like Lisa and quoting her favorite books, and it is clear she has a secret partner in Tony.

Giselle works out who Max is seeing and puts Lisa on a plane home. Lisa turns the car around and races to Max's house, where he asks her to stay with him. Then he finds her journal, full of notes about him, and thinks she has been using him as material for her next book. Unable to explain without betraying Giselle, Lisa leaves. Giselle steps in to comfort him.

Back home, Lisa sees the headlines: The Thorn Tree is a bestseller, and Max is now with Giselle. In Los Angeles, Giselle tells Max she is pregnant. Lisa reads the last chapter of his book and finds that he took her advice and gave his hero a happy ending. Then comes the news that Max and Giselle are getting married.

In secret, Giselle and Tony celebrate their plan. A hidden clause in Max's contract hands all his book rights to his spouse, and those rights would save Giselle's failing company. She even admits she paid Lisa's bonus with royalties she had been holding back from her for years. With a pep talk from her mother, Lisa flies to Los Angeles to stop the wedding.

Tony tries to throw her out of the venue and nearly hits her, until Max stops him. In front of Giselle, Lisa finally confesses that she was hired to help Giselle seduce him, that she fell for him for real, and that Tony is part of the plan. Max asks Giselle if the baby is really his. Tony admits it is his, along with the contract trick. Max calls off the wedding and takes Lisa's hand.

Some time later, Lisa reads from her first novel under her own name, a bestseller about how she met Max. Giselle has gone bankrupt and writes the Heidi Brushfire books herself, and Max has started his own publishing company. When Nina asks from the audience when the wedding is, Max gets down on one knee, and Lisa says yes.
